Background
In November 2023, Stark Works was appointed as the chosen ICP for delivering water and electricity to a new residential development in Aylesbury.
The project consists of 64 dwellings and 151 apartments, including the installation of a 500kVA and an 800kVA substation, along with a feeder pillar serving 16 EVC points.
The project
The development is replacing former office buildings, utilising an existing substation from the DNO that will need to be energised.
The project, expected to last between 12 and 18 months, has been divided into two main phases for mains installation, with additional phases as required.
Cable laying is complete, and once the easement is finalised, the connection can be completed. The new electric network has been adopted by Stark Infra.

The details
The scope includes the supply and commissioning of all new onsite 90/125mm MDPE mains and 25mm services to the 64 dwellings, terminating in chambers at the boundary.
Additionally, Stark Works is managing the MPAN changeover from UKPN to Stark, affecting 100 existing and 50 new connections. Two new HD cutouts will feed the flats, and one will serve the EV charging points.
Challenges
One significant challenge was the simultaneous installation of two packaged substations. However, effective coordination between our in-house electrical project management team and DNO engineers ensured a successful connection, much to the client’s delight.
The project also involved managing two off-site water connections. Working with the water incumbent can be challenging, but through persistence and high-quality project management, both connections were established ahead of schedule.
Another challenge will be the MPAN changeover from the DNO to us in a single day. We have prepared thoroughly to handle this, reinforcing our reputation as an ICP that delivers on its promises.
Next steps
We are currently waiting for the legal issues to be resolved and then will proceed with the final connections. Customers have praised our approach and flexibility, anticipating project completion by mid-2025.
