The 2G switch off: Stark Connect’s 4G project.
Mobile network operators in the UK are in the process of retiring old technology (2G and 3G networks) and replacing it with newer, more secure and diverse systems (4G, 5G and IoT networks).
For us, that means the way we communicate with your meter and data loggers may also need to change.
Here we’ll answer some questions on how we’re helping our customers navigate this network change.
Why does the 2G switch off impact my energy meter?
As a data collector, we communicate remotely with your meters by dialling them every day to retrieve the data. For the most part, this means dialling a SIM card using the mobile networks.
How are Stark handling the 2G switch off ?
Our 4G Upgrade Programme is already in place to minimise disruption to your metering estate
We have a list of all meters and data loggers which are affected and will be contacting those customers to advise of the need to upgrade.
Do I need all my meters replaced to comply with the 2G switch off?
Not at all. Each meter has a separate communications modem which we can replace during a short site visit.
How does the 2G/3G switch off affect me if my meter is nearly 10 years old?
Your meter is likely to have a 10-year certification limit, which will become due for replacement.
Any meters you have that fit into this bracket, we will replace and upgrade the communications in one single visit.
What if my meter uses Internet (IP/Ethernet) to send data to Stark?
In these cases we will not need to do anything – your meter is not relying on mobile networks to send us data so does not require a communications upgrade.
My meter location does not have 4G signal – how will that work?
Where 4G is expected but not yet operable, 2G will continue to be used in the interim but we’ll take the steps as part of this upgrade programme to future-proof the meter and modem, so they are ready for 4G once it becomes available.
Will my energy data still be available?
Yes. It’s business as usual. Your energy data will continue to be collected by our teams sent to Suppliers and put into Stark ID for you.
How do I know if I need a communications modem upgrade?
Our team will be in touch and schedule in the works at a convenient time.
How can I ask more about this?
