Background

Costa Coffee is a leading coffee shop chain with over 1,200 stores globally. To support its business growth strategy, Costa set targets to reduce energy consumption and has made significant progress in managing energy within its stores.

To start working towards these targets, Costa initiated the roll-out of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) devices across its stores in 2009. Since then, the energy team has achieved substantial reductions in energy consumption. They accomplished this through two key approaches: investing in energy-efficient equipment during store refurbishments and actively involving store staff.

Challenge

High-quality data was crucial for evaluating equipment efficiency and accurately reporting energy reductions achieved through interventions.

In addition to being Costa’s designated Data Collector and Aggregator (DC/DA), Stark was commissioned to develop a customised data solution. Stark consistently provided reliable energy data to the consultant weekly and created historical baseline profiles for new sites, simplifying the implementation of the programme.

Solution

Step 1: Introducing Energy-Efficient Equipment

The Costa energy team utilised Stark’s reporting platform, Stark ID, to access energy data directly. Monitoring energy data through Stark ID enabled them to trial different equipment and assess the impact of store refurbishments on energy efficiency effectively.

Step 2: Custom Data Provision

Stark collaborated closely with a specialist consultant to develop an advanced and customised data export. This export provided detailed visibility of meter flags and data under investigation, ensuring the consultant had complete insight into the data provided by Stark.

Step 3: Baselining New Stores

Costa’s reporting relied on historical data to track performance, which posed a challenge for new stores without such data. To address this, Stark’s Energy Analytics team developed an innovative model to generate baseline yearly profiles. By considering seasonal variation, floor size, and store type, accurate baseline profiles were created, thereby preventing discouragement among employees due to missing data or unrealistic targets.

Results

Since the roll-out of AMR devices in 2009, Costa achieved a 32% reduction in energy consumption through the introduction of energy-efficient equipment. This performance is expected to be maintained or improved through employee engagement.
