Primrose Solar owns and operates large-scale solar PV farms in the UK. Moreover, the company supplies around 191,690MWh of electricity annually to 55,570 homes. This significant contribution results in a reduction of 85,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions and actively supports environmental preservation. Additionally, Primrose strives to have a positive environmental impact by generating renewable energy and by protecting the biodiversity of each site.


Solar PV sites need prompt accreditation from Ofgem, to claim solar subsidies such as ROCs (Renewable Obligation Certificates). Consequently, each site must successfully pass the necessary commissioning tests and generate renewable electricity. In order to forecast demand and balance settlements correctly, Primrose relies on the highest accuracy and real-time data.

In early 2014, Primrose engaged Stark to provide industry-leading, near real-time data collection and metering services. The objective was to ensure that each solar farm gains prompt accreditation, enabling the immediate generation of renewable electricity upon energization. Our solution provides dependable production data, which directly translates into income for Primrose when the electricity is sold.

Building a long-term relationship

By utilising Stark ID, Primrose gains the ability to visualise and analyse its data in near real-time, with updates occurring every 30 minutes (T+30). As a result, Primrose finds reassurance in the quality and reliability of this near real-time data, placing trust in Stark’s expertise and support. To meet Primrose’s unique requirements, Stark created an “enhanced” service offering that guarantees the around-the-clock availability of meter engineers. Consequently, both organisations can proactively address potential issues, manage risks, and minimise downtime. This innovative approach empowers Primrose to drive change and set new industry standards within the solar PV sector.


The successful energization of Wilton Solar Farm, a 9.5MW capacity plant, presented a significant challenge due to the involvement of multiple stakeholders during construction. However, Stark ensured that Primrose met Ofgem’s 31st March 2015 Renewable Obligation deadline by deploying an engineer on-site during the days leading up to energization. As a result, the meter connection was promptly guaranteed shortly after the final commissioning tests were completed.

Currently, Stark collects near real-time data for all Primrose sites, which boast a total combined capacity of 183MW. The provision of near real-time data and 24-hour meter maintenance by Stark proves vital to the ongoing success of Primrose’s generation activities. As a result, with the meters taken care of, Primrose can wholeheartedly focus on its environmental goal of improving the ecology of its sites through effective habitat management plans.
