MHHS is not P272: Understand the differences.

What is the difference between MHHS vs P272? Isn’t MHHS just a bigger P272?

Elexon’s P272 programme in 2017 was a precursor to Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS), an early stage if you like.

However the experience suppliers, agents & businesses will have when migration to HH settlement happens for MHHS will be very, very different.

Here we answer those questions, so you can understand what’s happening in the energy industry today and how it’s going to affect you.

MHHS v P272

MHHS is a forward-thinking change in the UK electricity industry that prepares us for Net Zero by providing faster and more comprehensive electricity data.

P272 played a role in this, but the experience for consumers, suppliers and data & metering agents is not comparable.

Which meters will be affected by MHHS?

All electricity meters in the UK which are currently Non-Half Hourly or Traditional ‘dumb’ meters will be switched to Half Hourly settlement. This includes all domestic and non-domestic meters.

All Half Hourly meters will also be onboarded to the new operational model & communication methods created with the MHHS Programme.

Which meters were affected by P272?

All Non-Half Hourly meters profile classes 05, 06, 07 and 08 were migrated through to Half Hourly (profile class 0).

These NHH profile classes are categorised as follows:

• Profile Class 05 – Non-domestic Maximum Demand (MD) with a Peak Load Factor (LF) of less than 20%
• Profile Class 06 – Non-domestic MD with a peak LF between 20% and 30%
• Profile Class 07 – Non-domestic MD with a peak LF between 30% and 40%
• Profile Class 08 – Non-domestic MD with a peak LF over 40%

MHHS is more than switching meters to HH.

MHHS is not just switching meters over to Half Hourly as P272 did.

MHHS is changing the entire Operating Model, Communications and a stricter settlement timetable.

P272 did not do this.

P272 took a portion of NHH meters and changed the measurement class to HH settled under all the existing frameworks.

That means under MHHS the UK’s Suppliers, Data and Metering agents – the three members of the Supplier hub – are undergoing significant changes to the way they operate and must qualify for new MHHS roles.

Choose your MHHS data and metering partners carefully.

Where you had a successful P272 experience does not mean that those same partners will be able to provide a good MHHS migration.

This is because the massive changes to the operating landscape under MHHS mean all data & metering agents must create new systems and processes to handle new requirements.

Agents must be able to provide the data & metering services MHHS requires, qualify for new roles and meet new, faster settlement timetables.
