Background

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for the healthcare services provided at Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital in North West London.

Employing over 3,300 staff, they deliver high quality healthcare to the residents of the London Borough of Hillingdon and surrounding areas: a population of over 350,000 people.

Hyder Mohammad, joined the Trust as Head of Sustainability in April 2020, during the height of the UK’s first national lockdown. This meant that getting access to their accurate energy consumption data to make the right decisions was going to prove a real challenge.

Tasked with pulling together a bid for funding from the Governments Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) to enable the Trust to access various energy and cost-saving initiatives, Hyder’s initial focus was to accurately collate and validate the Trust’s energy consumption data for his team and also for their Finance team in order to review and validate invoices. “You don’t just need access to energy data, you also need the highest quality data available.”

As well as being faced with the restrictions of a global pandemic, the Trust were challenged by their energy data being split across multiple providers and multiple platforms.


Solution

Stark’s Account Management team quickly provided the Trust with all the detailed information available across their metering portfolio, this was vital and Hyder believes “The more detailed the data, the more confidence that gives you in terms of achieving your energy saving initiatives”

With this new level of insight, Hyder and his team could see which meters had data collected by Stark and which were still with other operators. And impressed by the Stark’s offering, The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust requested that Stark take responsibility for collecting all energy data across the Trust’s electricity and gas meters.

Now with Stark ID, Stark’s energy data management and analytics platform, the Trust have access to all their energy data for the past three years at no additional charge.  And by using Stark’s unparalleled, high quality energy data, the Trust have more confidence when identifying issues with consumption and when calculating the potential savings for new proposed energy saving initiatives. The Finance team also have more confidence when paying invoices for energy the Trust consumed.


Results

The Trust was awarded £1.8 million in funding from The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme which will kickstart numerous energy efficiency projects. One project alone will give the Trust savings of up to £215,000 savings per year.

The energy data collected by Stark is also displayed to the public which was the quickest project achieved so far with the support of Stark.
