CASE STUDY
Integration of HV connections for Special Educational Needs School
Background
In March 2023, Stark Works was appointed to complete a new high-voltage connection from UKPN’s network to the school.
Stark Works was engaged to provide innovative technical solutions for a Special Educational Needs and Disability School in Kent, previously accustomed to using Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).
Scheduled for completion in 2024, this connection terminates within the school, ensuring a dedicated and robust energy supply.
The project
This project involved directly connecting a substation to the school, providing a new 200kVA import load, and integrating a 500kVA substation facilitated by a high-voltage connection from UKPN’s network.
The turnkey approach included advising on Point of Connection, low and high-voltage connections, and terminating the connection within the school. This solution consolidated pricing into a single package, emphasising clear communication and strict adherence to deadlines.

Co-ordinating with multiple stakeholders

Clear communication remained throughout
Transparent Process
Historically relying on DNOs, the client placed trust in Stark Works due to our transparency throughout the process. We provided technical advice, explained the export and photovoltaic (PV) processes, and maintained monthly calls to keep the client updated on project status and address any queries promptly.
The new LV network from the substation has been adopted by Stark’s internal IDNO, Stark Infra.

Challenges
The project faced challenges, particularly the easement process involving multiple landowners, including a government department.
Through persistence and diligent work from our pre-construction department, we achieved a positive outcome, ensuring the project remained on time and within budget.
Meeting tight timescales was another challenge that we successfully navigated.
Next steps
We are currently resolving easement issues, with an anticipated project completion by the end of 2024.
