Data-Driven EV Charging: Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust Keeps Building Energy in Focus

DOWNLOAD

Background

Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust partnered with Stark Charge for a phased solution beginning with new strategic installations, then integrating existing chargers into one unified platform.

Stark’s approach delivered both optimised hardware and seamless data integration—providing half-hourly charging data in Stark ID alongside building energy data, allowing Kent and Medway to manage EV expansion without compromising energy visibility.

The Customer Challenge

Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust required a reliable charging infrastructure to support their growing fleet of electric ambulances and service vehicles.

Energy capacity constraints and a lack of visibility into existing systems made planning difficult without expert guidance.

With its electricity data already in Stark ID, our team could accurately analyse available capacity across their sites.

This existing data relationship proved invaluable, enabling precise calculations for optimal charger placement and ensuring infrastructure matched actual needs rather than theoretical
maximums.

By leveraging real consumption patterns, Stark delivered a solution that worked within Kent and Medway’s energy constraints while maximising charging availability.

EV charge points are critical for our electric Rapid Response Fleet ensuring we have a reliable and a mobile mental health service. By providing on-site charging, we are able to guarantee that our vehicles are always ready to respond and attend to patients whiles advancing our sustainability objectives as a Trust.

The Solution

Stark implemented a comprehensive, phased approach for Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust that addressed immediate needs while building for the future:

Phase 1: Strategic New Installations

Facing energy capacity constraints, Stark Charge began with a detailed data analysis of Kent and Medway’s distribution centres.

Rather than installing an arbitrary number of chargers, Stark analysed available capacity to determine the optimal number and placement of charging points.

This data-driven approach resulted in the installation of nine 22kW sockets across three critical sites, maximising charging capability.

Phase 2: Integration of Existing Infrastructure

Beyond solving the immediate need for ambulance charging infrastructure, Kent and Medway discovered two existing chargers at another site.

These basic “plug and play” 7kWs lacked data visibility, maintenance and control.

As they were OCPP compliant chargers, Stark were able to take over providing Kent and Medway with consolidated visibility and control across all charging assets.

Ongoing Expansion: Meeting Growing Demands

As additional departments within the Trust began electrifying their fleets, Stark continued deploying new charging points.

This natural expansion has supported non-clinical departments like catering, with all implementations guided by Stark’s data-first approach.

The customer service has been incredible. Fast, reliable and honest.

Data Integration: The Stark Difference

What truly sets Stark Charge apart is the integration of Half Hourly EV charging data within Stark ID—the same platform Kent and Medway uses for building energy management.

This unique capability allows their energy managers to clearly separate EV charging from building consumption, ensuring established energy management strategies remain effective without being skewed by vehicle charging patterns.

Installation of EV charge points form part of our Net Zero strategic ambitions for KMPT by reducing travel emissions, cutting operational costs and fulfilling our Green Plan commitment. Every charge delivered, powers not just vehicles but a cleaner healthier KMPT community.
