Spar achieves remarkable energy savings with Stark

Background

SPAR, one of the world’s largest international food retail chains, operates over 12,000 stores in 40 countries. In the UK alone, they have more than 2,400 stores with a turnover exceeding £3 billion. James Hall & Co Ltd., a leading wholesaler and distributor for SPAR, serves over 540 stores in Northern England.

The Edisford Road SPAR store in Clitheroe, Lancashire, owned and operated by Phil Bridge, installed an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) device provided by Stark in 2012. The objective was to monitor energy usage closely and identify areas for improved energy efficiency which would ultimately result in energy savings.

Project

With the installation of AMR, Stark began collecting half-hourly energy data and granted Phil access to their powerful energy analytics platform, Stark ID. This enabled Phil to monitor and visualize energy data, generate reports, and set reduction targets. Phil also actively engaged his employees in identifying energy-saving opportunities.

Following data analysis and with support from Terry Smithies, the Technical Services Manager at James Hall & Co. Ltd., a comprehensive store “walk around” was conducted. The primary purpose was to discuss equipment close-down procedures for high-energy-consuming devices. Key areas of focus included:

  1. Determining optimal timings for turning off equipment, such as coffee machines.
  2. Identifying switch locations and their control, ranging from ice cream freezer lighting to news and magazine lighting.
  3. Identifying critical equipment that must remain powered at all times, such as a chilled food cabinet.

Using Stark’s AMR data and analysis from Stark ID reports, a “close-down” and “opening-up” checklist was created to target energy consumption during unoccupied hours (midnight to 7 am). This initiative significantly reduced overall consumption, and the checklists ensured that even new employees could efficiently contribute to energy reduction.

Results

These interventions led to an impressive 20% reduction in energy use at the store between midnight and 7 am. Stark’s advanced analytics, high-quality data, and comprehensive reporting, combined with regular communication with staff, generated positive financial saving figures. This proactive approach helped maintain enthusiasm and fostered belief in the project among the staff.

Within a year, the store saved £2,600 on its annual energy bill. These substantial savings were reinvested in an efficient lighting project, resulting in an additional 20% reduction in energy consumption. Overall, these initiatives led to a total saving of £4,100 by the end of the second year. SPAR has successfully implemented this energy management approach, developed in collaboration with Stark, across all James Hall SPAR stores and their independent retailers.

The remarkable results achieved by Edisford Road SPAR clearly demonstrate that organisations of any size can realize significant energy and financial savings through a combined approach of utilizing Stark’s advanced analytics, effective reporting, and fostering behavioural change and employee engagement.
